Cubism Exploration (Session Two only)
Students will create a “Cubist-Inspired Symbolic Self-Portrait.” As a nontraditional self-portrait, this 2-D collage project encourages young artists to explore and express who they are through various personal and artistic choices they make which ultimately will reflect and communicate their identity. We will explore and experiment with a variety of mediums. As a mixed media project, students will incorporate and thereby learn the nature of the following: graphite, acrylic paint, watercolor, oil pastels, textiles, textured paper, photocopied photographs and found objects. Students will acquire knowledge about various artists, their historical context and art movements in relation to Cubism and Fauvism. Students will further develop and push their drawing and painting skills through close observation of their own personal objects that have significance for them. Various painting techniques will be explored, as well as frottage, to gain an understanding of both real and implied textures. As the process and various steps unfold, students will achieve a better understanding of overall composition and gain confidence in creating artwork that symbolically tells their story.
English
Are you an avid reader, looking for new authors and genres? Or maybe you love to write and record your observations. Maybe, just maybe, you're not that crazy about either reading or writing but, since you have to do them in school, you'd like to find ways to make them easier and more interesting. No matter which of these is you, you should sign up for the English sampler classes this summer. During the first session, we will focus on reading: checking out exciting first lines, discussing our favorite authors and genres, playing vocabulary games and other cool stuff. During the second session, the focus will shift to writing: finding ideas and the good words to express them, thinking like a writer and trying out different forms of short poems. English class is for everyone!
Graffiti Art (Session One only)
In the past decade, graffiti art has become more mainstream than ever. It is a worldwide self-expressive art form that has evolved into many new and exciting styles. This summer students will be introduced to the deeper meaning of graffiti and negotiate the line between mural artwork and graffiti. After understanding the history of how this art form has evolved, we will create our own graffiti stencil icons as well as create a large-scale group piece centering on our class theme.
Math Around the World (Session Two only)
When will you ever use math in real life? The second summer math class is designed for middle school students to take a step back and see how math is used around the world. The concepts will go beyond the use of math to tell time, count money and measure their height. While students are instructed on how math is used in other countries around the world and how it can be used in our daily lives in the U.S., they will learn mathematical concepts and practice skills to enhance their middle school math experience. They will be asked to analyze concepts, research math origins in other countries and design their own projects to apply what they have learned. So if you have ever asked yourself, "Why do I need to learn this math concept?" or "Where did this math concept come from?" then this is the class for you!
Math Enrichment (Session One only)
The summer math class is for middle school students who need to take a few weeks to enhance their current mathematical abilities, and the class is designed to meet the needs of every type of student. Whether you are a student who needs extra practice on basic skills or content you covered last year in math, or whether you can't get enough of math and want to be challenged, this is the class for you! Students will receive instruction based on the WNS middle school math curriculum, which will ensure that they are better prepared for the upcoming year. So if you like brainteasers, need some review or just enjoy math, sign up today for this session!
Spanish
Are you going to be new to the WNS middle school in September and wondering what our Spanish program is like? Maybe you've never studied Spanish and want to get a head start. Or maybe you're going to be a sixth grader and don't want to forget your Spanish over the summer? Either way, these summer Spanish classes are for you! In a fun setting that includes music, songs and games, we will learn and review basic conversational vocabulary, sentence patterns and grammar. The first session’s focus will be on school and classroom vocabulary and activities. During the second session, we will learn about activities outside of school. ¡A divertirse y para aprender!
